We’ve all been there: staring at the same four walls and desperate for a change of scenery without the airport stress. Whether you’re a local or just visiting for the weekend, here is my curated list of nearby staycations to help you make the most of Glasgow Scotland IRL.

1. Jack’s Alt-Stays, Millport
The Vibe: A colorful, “alt” twist on the traditional cabin stay with major island energy.
The Experience: These aren’t your average brown sheds; each cabin has a totally unique theme (like the ‘Hive’ or the ‘Reef’) and comes with its own private hot tub. It’s “accessible adventure” at its best-just a short ferry hop from Largs.
The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: You don’t need to book the ferry in advance! Just turn up at Largs, but make sure to grab a cheeky ice cream at Nardini’s while you wait for the boat.
Location: College Street, Millport, Isle of Cumbrae (KA28 0HE).
Booking: Direct via jacksaltstays.co.uk.
Price: Typically £150–£210 per night (look out for their 20% off weeknight deals in the off-season).
2. Landal Whitekirk Hill, North Berwick
The Vibe: Sleek, Scandi-inspired luxury nestled in the East Lothian countryside.
The Experience: If you want the “Influencer” aesthetic, this is it. The lodges are stunning, the on-site spa is top-tier, and you’re minutes away from the beaches of North Berwick. It feels incredibly premium and secluded.
The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: The “Orangery” on-site does an incredible brunch-book a table there even if you’re just planning to spend the day exploring the nearby ruins.
Location: Whitekirk, North Berwick, East Lothian (EH39 5PR).
Booking: Online via landal.co.uk or major booking platforms.
Price: From £119 per night for couples’ lodges; larger family lodges average £450–£600 for a weekend stay. Pricing can vary so please check the website.
3. Landal Barnsoul, Dumfries & Galloway
The Vibe: An eco-conscious retreat where the focus is on switching off and reconnecting with the stars.
The Experience: This is one of the newer spots on the scene, focusing on sustainability without sacrificing comfort. The stargazing here is next-level because there’s so little light pollution. It’s the perfect “digital detox” spot. Note that this site is still in development so while most of the cabins are fully ready, you may see some development areas around the park.
The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: Pack your hiking boots. There is a hidden waterfall walk nearby that feels like a total secret-ask the reception team for the exact path details.
Location: Shawhead, Dumfries & Galloway (DG2 9SQ).
Booking: Online via landal.co.uk.
Price: Great value eco-options starting around £160–£190 for a short break; luxury spa lodges range from £350+. Pricing can vary so please check the website.
The Final Verdict
If you only have time for one, I’d suggest heading to Jack’s Alt-Stays because the novelty of the themed cabins and the “island time” feeling of Millport makes it feel like you’re much further than an hour away from the city.
All of the stays are brilliant though, and we can say that because we’ve been to them all. These recommendations are based on our own experiences.
