We’ve all been there: staring at a free afternoon in the city and wanting to do something more memorable than just “going for a drink.” Whether you’re a local or just visiting for the weekend, here is my curated list of a City Centre mini date to help you make the most of Glasgow IRL.

1. The Craft Pottery

The Vibe: A bright, relaxed studio tucked away on Washington Street where the pressure to be a “pro artist” disappears the moment you pick up a brush.

The Experience: Located just a stone’s throw from the Clyde, this is the perfect starting point. You pick your blank ceramic piece (anything from mugs to plant pots), grab your paints, and get two hours of pure creative flow. It’s one of the best ways to actually talk to someone without the distraction of a screen.

The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: They are BYOB with no corkage fee. Since you’re right by the riverside, it’s a great spot to start your afternoon before walking further into the city centre for drinks. There’s a Sainsbury’s Local just at Anderston Quay if you need to pick up drinks ahead of The Craft Pottery.

2. The Drum and Monkey

The Vibe: Grand, old-school Glasgow opulence housed in a stunning former 1920s bank building on St Vincent Street.

The Experience: This is the perfect “pit stop” after your pottery session. Even if you aren’t a massive ale fan, the architecture alone – with its massive marble columns and ornate ceilings – is worth the price of a drink. It feels high-end but without the high-end price tag, and it’s a great spot to relax after a creative afternoon.

The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: Look up! The original bank crest is still visible above the entrance, and the interior is one of the best examples of “American-style” bank architecture in the city.

3. Mowgli Street Food

The Vibe: A whimsical forest of fairy lights, indoor trees, and (if you’re lucky) those famous rope swing chairs.

The Experience: Mowgli is designed for sharing, which makes it the ideal finale for a date day. The food comes out as it’s ready in tiered tiffin tins, making the meal feel like a continuous discovery of flavors. It’s vibrant, busy, and incredibly “Instagrammable,” located just a short walk from the pub.

The Glasgow IRL Pro-Tip: If you want the iconic swing seats, make sure to request them in your booking notes, they are the most requested spot in the house and go fast!

The Final Verdict

If you only have time for one, I’d suggest heading to The Craft Pottery because it leaves you with a physical memento of your date (once it’s fired and glazed!), and the BYOB policy makes it such a great, affordable afternoon activity.
