The Ultimate Glasgow Escape Guide: 3 Staycations Within 90 Minutes

Fancy a wee weekend a scape without having to head to the airport? Whether you’re a Glasgow local or just visiting, there’s plenty of options which are a short car journey or train ride away. We’ve picked out three places that we’ve personally visited and highly recommend.

1. Jack’s Alt-Stays, Millport

Have you been to Millport before? Many people have but this was our first time visiting and it was for a very good reason. A cabin experience that we stumbled across while browsing TikTok one night.

If you’re looking for something quirky, cool and nature like, then these cabin’s don’t disappoint. Each cabin has a totally unique theme and it lives up to that vibe throughout. It has its own private hot tub, most of which are wood-fired, really adding to the whole outdoor experience. It’s also situated on The Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland’s most accessible island which can be accessed via a short ferry ride from Largs. You can drive on the ferry, or still go on without a car if you’ve opted for the train option.

Tip: You don’t need to book the ferry in advance! Just turn up at Largs, but make sure to grab a cheeky ice cream at Nardini’s while you wait for the boat.

Location: College Street, Millport, Isle of Cumbrae (KA28 0HE)
Booking: Direct via jacksaltstays.co.uk
Price: Typically £150–£210 per night (look out for their 20% off weeknight deals in the off-season).

2. Landal Whitekirk Hill, North Berwick

If you’re looking for Sleek, Scandi-inspired luxury nestled in the East Lothian countryside, then this modern Landal getaway could be for you. Situated a short drive away from the beautiful North Berwick, this is such a lovely escape.

I think these places are always good when not only do you get a stunning lodge to stay at, but you can pop along to the main building where you can access their shop, restaurant and spa facilities. We discovered Landal Whitekirk Hill while searching Google for a nice escape for a couple of nights. We were surprised when we got there to see just how stunning and modern it was. The 2-person lodge we stayed in was really spacious, had a generous sized kitchen, and the bathroom was huge offering a double shower and a separate bath tub.

If you’re looking for something that feels premium, and isn’t too expensive then do check this place out. They even left us a bottle of prosecco which was a nice touch.

Tip: The Orangery on-site does an incredible brunch – book a table there even if you’re just planning to spend the day exploring the nearby ruins.

Location: Whitekirk, North Berwick, East Lothian (EH39 5PR)
Booking: Online via landal.co.uk or major booking platforms.
Price: From £119 per night for couples’ lodges; larger family lodges average £450–£600 for a weekend stay. Pricing can vary so please check the website.

3. Landal Barnsoul, Dumfries & Galloway

This is a fairly new site so its still in development with building work going on across the park, but the lodge we got was beautiful. This is one of those places that gives eco-conscious vibe and its perfect just for a chilled break away.

This is one of the newer spots on the scene, focusing on sustainability without sacrificing comfort. The stargazing here is next-level, especially as we’re going through Autumn. It’s the perfect digital detox spot.

Tip: While there isn’t an activity centre at this park, they do have a reception desk with friendly staff on hand during the day. You can also make purchases from their on-site shop.

Location: Shawhead, Dumfries & Galloway (DG2 9SQ)
Booking: Online via landal.co.uk
Price: Great value eco-options starting around £160–£190 for a short break; luxury spa lodges range from £350+. Pricing can vary so please check the website.

The Final Verdict

If you only have time for one, we’d suggest heading to Jack’s Alt-Stays – the novelty of the themed cabins and the island-time feeling of Millport makes it feel like you’re much further than an hour away from the city.

All of the stays are brilliant though, and we can say that because we’ve been to them all. These recommendations are based on our own experiences.
