Glasgow has always punched above its weight when it comes to free days out. The museums are world-class, the parks are enormous, and this summer the city has an extra gear – with the Commonwealth Games bringing a wave of free events, live sites and cultural activity across every neighbourhood. Here’s where to start.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
The big one, and still the best. Twenty-two themed galleries, a Spitfire hanging from the ceiling, a Salvador Dali painting, and an organ recital every afternoon. You could spend a full day here and not see everything. Free entry, no booking needed. Look out for our experience post here which will be live on the site soon.
The Burrell Collection, Pollok Country Park
The Burrell Collection houses over 9,000 pieces of treasure, artworks and exotic objects collected by Glasgow merchant Sir William Burrell – highlights include The Red Ballet Skirts by Degas and The Thinker by Rodin. The surrounding Pollok Country Park is worth the trip alone – 361 acres of woodland, gardens and walking trails, plus the famous Highland cows grazing year-round. All free.
Scotties in the City – Citywide Art Trail
One of the best things happening in Glasgow right now. Scotties in the City brings 40 giant Scottie dog sculptures and 52 smaller Scotties to Glasgow from 18 June to 16 August 2026, each decorated with its own unique design, raising awareness and funds for Maggie’s. It’s free to explore, works well as a self-guided walk, and is genuinely one of those things that makes Glasgow feel like Glasgow. Download the app to track your progress.
Glasgow Mela, Kelvingrove Park – 5th July
Scotland’s biggest multicultural festival of music, dance and arts returns to Kelvingrove Park on Sunday 5th July. Free entry, brilliant atmosphere, and one of the most joyful days out the city offers all year.
Commonwealth Games Free Events
You don’t need a ticket to feel the Games this summer. Children, young people and families can enjoy free activities, sport and live screenings of Commonwealth Games events at the Game On Live Site in Kelvingrove Park. The Glasgow 2026 Festival runs from 23 May to 9 August with over 150 free events across the city. Check glasgow2026.com for the full programme.
Merchant City Festival
The Merchant City Festival returns as a flagship event of the Commonwealth Games summer, taking over the heart of the city across two weekends with street performance, live music, food and free outdoor events. One of those weekends where the city centre genuinely comes alive.
Glasgow Botanic Gardens
Popular with students, dog walkers, and anyone who wants a wee bit of peace – the gardens along the River Kelvin are lovely and right in the heart of the West End. Step inside the Victorian glasshouses for exotic tree ferns and rare orchids, or just find a bench and stay a while. Free entry, open daily.
The Rail Yard Farmers Market, Kelvinbridge
Scotland’s farmers, growers, bakers, makers and collectors come together every Saturday from 10am to 3pm at The Rail Yard for the West End’s favourite weekly farmers market. Free to browse, and a great excuse for a West End wander.
